Pre-consumer
Pre-consumer Recycled Content – (also referred to as Post Industrial Content in older projects prior to LEED v4)
Refers to materials that are recycled from manufacturing process waste. These materials are never part of a viable product sold to a consumer. They go from manufacturing stream to waste and then back into the manufacturing stream before finally ending up in a product. LEED requires that certain percentages based on cost are met. An example of LEED v4 requirements is:
MR (Materials & Resource) Credit 4.1 states “Use materials with recycled content such that the sum of post-consumer recycled content plus one-half of the Pre-consumer content constitutes an additional 10% beyond MR Credit 4.1 (total of 20% based on cost) of the total value of the materials in the project.”
